Extradition proceedings to France withdrawn

By Katy Smart  |  01.03.2024

Sonn Macmillan Walker represented SM, in extradition proceedings. SM was sought by France in relation to trafficking 26kg of heroin through France. In his absence, he had been given a 5 year sentence and extradition proceedings were instigated in 2019.

Lawyers were instructed in France to negotiate with the French prosecutor to withdraw the request. SMW simultaneously petitioned the Home Office in the UK to transfer the sentence here thereby compromising the extradition request.

On 22 January 2024, nearly five years after the proceedings in the UK started, and nearly ten years after the alleged offence was committed, SM was discharged following the French Prosecutor’s acceptance the extradition was no longer valid.

His family wrote,

“Your company and you ladies have made this day possible; all the credit is due to your hard work, belief and can-do attitude for the best result. Wishing you much success going forward and hope you continue to be with the best lawyer’s firm and greatest solicitors that you are.”

Katy Smart and Poppy Ingall acted on this case. Natasha Draycott of 5 St Andrew’s Hill was the instructed barrister.
