Immediate Custody Avoided for Perverting the Course of Justice
12 October 2026
Our client pleaded guilty at Manchester Crown Court to perverting the course of justice, in connection with a request that she received under section 172 Road Traffic Act 1988, to identify the driver of a vehicle registered to her.
The police had conducted a thorough investigation and identified from the image generated by the roadside camera, that our client was the driver of the vehicle when the alleged speeding offence took place. Additionally, the police established that the individual nominated by our client as the driver, had also been nominated by several other people in connection with their allegations of speeding, and that the address where the nominee resided, was being used as a section 172 “farm”.
The court was persuaded to impose a suspended sentence of imprisonment in conjunction with a community order.
The matter was prepared by David Sonn and Counsel at the sentencing hearing was Neil Ronan of Lincoln House Chambers.
The client was very pleased with the result, leaving the following feedback for Mr Sonn:
I just wanted to to take the opportunity to say a huge thank you to you and your team
You have all supported me through what has undoubtedly been one of the most difficult and stressful times of my life, and I’m incredibly grateful for everything you have done for me throughout the process.
The outcome was as good as one could hope for, and I was genuinely so relieved with the result. I have to admit, the last hearing was slightly unnerving when we realised it was going to be the sentencing hearing, but your support and guidance helped me to make the correct decisions.
Thank you again for all your hard work, patience, reassurance and support. I really do appreciate everything you and your team have done for me.
Hopefully, in the nicest possible way, I won’t ever have a reason to contact you again! But I will always be very grateful that I had you and your team on my side when I needed you.
