Benefit fraud acquittal at Crown Court

By David Sonn  |  12.02.2019

Sonn Macmillan Walker represented G who was unanimously acquitted of housing benefit fraud at Wood Green Crown Court.

When applying for HB, G had not mentioned that he was the legal owner of 11 flats that were beneficially owned by his nephew. G denied receiving any benefit from the properties.

SMW analysed hundreds of pages of bank statements that the prosecution had either failed to obtain or analyse. They demonstrated that G had indeed received no identifiable benefit over a period of years and that G’s nephew had by contrast used the relevant accounts as his own.

The case was prepared by David Sonn who instructed Brian Altman QC as trial counsel.
