Extradition to Cyprus refused

By Katy Smart  |  24.05.2017

On 22 May 2017 M was discharged at Westminster magistrates’ court after a lengthy battle with extradition in a case involving seven experts tackling a number of bars to extradition.

M is a mother wanted by Cyprus for offences of fraud committed in 2012. She has a son and gave birth to a second son during the course of the proceedings. She was deemed to be the primary carer and the District Judge found that the deep emotional connection between her and her two children would mean that separation would be ‘utterly devastating for them.’ The District Judge found extradition would be disproportionate based on the ‘powerful evidence’ of child and family psychologist Dr Sharon Pettle.

Katy Smart of Sonn Macmillan Walker was the solicitor and Graeme Hall of Doughty Street Chambers was instructed counsel.
